The Plant Breeding E-Learning in Africa (PBEA) e-modules were originally developed as part of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Contract No. 24576. Building on Iowa State University’s expertise with online plant breeding education, the PBEA e-modules were developed for use in curricula to train African students in the management of crop breeding programs for public, local, and international organizations. The authors of this textbook series adapted and built upon the PBEA modules to develop a series of textbooks covering individual topic areas. It is our hope that this project will facilitate wider dissemination and reuse of the PBEA modules’ content.
Crop Genetics provides an introduction to the genetic concepts of reproductive systems, recombination, mutation, segregation and linkage analysis, inbreeding, quantitative inheritance, fertility regulation, population genetics and polyploidy.

Originally developed as part of a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Crop Improvement is the third book in our series originally published under the title "Plant Breeding E-learning in Africa."
This book covers basic principles in the genetic improvement of crop plants. Emphasis is placed on methods of cultivar development in self-pollinating, cross-pollinating and asexually propagating crops. Relevant examples of crop improvement research in Africa are utilized to cover factors affecting cultivar release, multiplication, and distribution of high-quality seed.
At the back of the book, you can find Applied Learning Activities, downloadable worksheets which can be adapted for classroom use.

This open textbook places emphasis on the design of a process pipeline for continuous development of new improved cultivars as a means to implement the cycle of crop improvement. Essential topics in New Line Development and New Line Evaluation are addressed, such as choice of parents, creation of progeny, and evaluation and selection of progeny. Students learn to design a process pipeline to produce improved cultivars that meet a specific product target which represents stakeholders’ needs.
Each of the books in the PBEA series comes with a section in its back matter titled "Applied Learning Activities" which includes additional content aligned to each chapter such as handouts and worksheets, csv files, code for statistical analysis in R, and recommended readings.

This open resources textbook contains 10 Units that describe and explain the main concepts in statistical analysis of psychological data (managing data, measures of central tendency, measures of spread, correlations, simple linear regression). In addition to conceptual descriptions and explanations of the basic analyses for descriptive statistics, this textbook also explains how to conduct those analyses with common statistical software (Excel) and open-source free software (R). This book is directed to undergraduates studying basic statistics, especially basic statistics in psychological research.

The Departure of Wolf brings together all the poems contained in ten of the eleven chapbooks in my Sun Series, spanning the period between January 2016 and January 2018. Each section of this compilation corresponds to a chapbook. Only Sun Series #5, “Four Sides of the Sun,” has been omitted. The four, seven-part poems in that work are closely integrated with illustrations by Molly Nagel in a fashion that doesn’t lend itself to the present format.

Cultivating stakeholders is a critical part of event management. This application activity covers the following four-stage process for involving stakeholders in an event: identification of stakeholders, classifying stakeholders, assessing stakeholders, and maintaining stakeholders. A case study is provided for students to apply to cultivating stakeholders in an industry example.

In the market segmentation of festival attendees’ application activity, students will review a mini-lecture material related to market segmentation, target marketing, and event positioning. Students will then apply the concepts of marketing segmentation, target marketing, and event positioning by analyzing data collected from an international music festival to establish the target market of the international music festival.

Risk management is a critical part of event management. This worksheet covers definitions of the key aspects of risk management and the steps taken by event management in creating a risk management plan. A case study is provided for students to apply the risk management process in an industry example.

Sponsorship management is activities that an event organization engages in to secure support from sponsors and manage the interests of sponsors at the event. The organizer and sponsor are jointly interested in successfully operating events for their mutual benefit. This section provides an overview of sponsorship management for events. The differences between sponsorship and advertising were compared for their strengths and weaknesses. The sponsorship management of a social event was discussed from the prospective from the perspective of organizers and sponsors. A case study on an LGBT+ event provided a case problem for how to construct a social media sponsorship package.

Financial management helps an event planning operation to achieve a profitable future in the competitive business environment. Astute financial management involves securing, allocating and controlling financial resources held by the operation. Good budgeting practices ensure a successful outcome of an event that meets financial objectives. A real-life case study is provided for students to apply financial management principles.

A practical how-to illustrating the process of developing a new food product from ideation and formulation to processing and lastly commercialization. This book highlights the overall process and gives instructions for each of the steps along the way.

This is the second entry in the Humanizing Science through STEM and the Arts (STEAM) interdisciplinary project (the first is available at Humanizing Science through STEAM Challenges).
For this series, the author/instructors collaborated with a cohort of future teachers in a science methods class who were majoring in Early Childhood Education. The future teachers authored stories for children inspired by Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and then read them aloud as part of a giving-back, service-learning activity.

This book may be of further use to any physician, advanced practitioners, or nurses who may also encounter pediatric patients with diabetes mellitus in the inpatient hospital setting. This book is specific to protocols and preferences for pediatric diabetes management at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. However, it also contains overarching concepts that transcend location wherever pediatric diabetes may be managed. At the time of publication, this book includes 4 Units, each consisting of 4-7 Chapters. Unit 1 introduces readers to an overview of diabetes mellitus, including its definition, diagnostic criteria, laboratory evaluation, clinical diagnosis, and key differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Unit 2 dives into understanding different types of insulins and their uses. Unit 3 walks readers through the creation of initial insulin regimens for pediatric patients with new-onset diabetes. Lastly, Unit 4 dives into the details of pediatric diabetes management at Stead Family Children’s Hospitals according to the protocols and capabilities of the institution and preferences of the pediatric endocrinology division.
