I really enjoyed reading this lesson. The title gets straight to the point, and the abstract is clear and direct about what the lesson will be about. The lesson is said to be for the 2nd grade, but the examples given are much younger than that. For example, counting to 20, and reciting the ABC’s is not a 2nd grade concept. It would be beneficial to give examples that can be used with 2nd graders. It also would be helpful to get information on how to actually create the book that the children make to go along with the activity. Overall, this is a unique idea to get students moving and working together. It can also be an entertaining brain break when students are having a hard time focusing.

Utility of Materials Designed to Support Teaching: Strong (2)

This lesson provides fairly clear guidelines for teachers to follow, however, it lacks the description of and directions for creating a mini-fold book.

Quality of Assessments: Limited (1)

In this lesson, the mini-fold book does a good job of assessing what the students know before and after the topic is taught, by having them record their predictions and their actual numbers for each activity. The mini-fold book does not assess the students understanding of the importance of a healthy body.

Opportunities for Deeper Learning: Superior (3)

This lesson gives students the opportunity to practice their deeper learning skills such as working collaboratively, communicating effectively and abstract reasoning as they work with a partner to make predictions, time one another and record their numbers. This lesson also provides appropriate scaffolding and directions for teachers and students.

Quality of Instructional and Practice Exercises: Superior (3)

This lesson provides students several opportunities to engage in minute-long activities that will help them understand the concept of 1 minute as well as the importance of a healthy body in completing these activities.

Quality of Explanation of the Subject Matter: Strong (2)

This lesson helps students understand the time of 1 minute and how long or short a minute might feel depending on what they are doing. While this lesson does a good job at explaining and helping students understand a minute, there is not a clear connection made between understanding a minute and understanding the importance of a healthy body.
