Advanced High School Statistics covers a first course in statistics, providing an introduction to applied statistics that is clear, concise, and accessible. This book was written to align with the AP© Statistics Course Description, but it's also popular in non-AP courses and community colleges.

We hope readers will take away three ideas from this book in addition to forming a foundation of statistical thinking and methods:

1. Statistics is an applied field with a wide range of practical applications.

2. You don't have to be a math guru to learn from real, interesting data.

3. Data are messy, and statistical tools are imperfect. But, when you understand the strengths and weaknesses of these tools, you can use them to learn about the real world.

Introduces chemistry related topics pertaining to everyday life. Includes topics such as renewable energy, clean air and water and global climate change using a relatively nonmathematical approach. Includes atomic/molecular structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, intermolecular forces, chemical reactions, acids/bases and the social and environmental role of chemistry. Recommended for non-science majors to fulfill the Gen Ed science with lab requirement.

In Writing 241/244, we will concentrate on the study and writing of realistic short fiction, with the purpose of stimulating your creativity, enhancing your analytical abilities, and improving your writing. Students write sketches and stories for class discussion and analysis, usually in the form of small group workshops. Students will also analyze professional stories to understand narrative tools, structural components, and stylistic choices through written analysis and small group discussion.

It is our hope that the successful student who completes a class using all or some of this text will have improved skills with application inside the discipline of philosophy, but also with application to work in other disciplines within academia. Our ultimate goal, however, is to help people develop techniques which support curiosity, open-mindedness, and an ability to collaborate successfully with others, across differences of experiences and background. Our dream is to help people “put their heads together.”

Course Description:
International Studies is a multidisciplinary study of the major geographical, political, economic, social and cultural issues that dominate the international agenda. This is an introductory course to international studies where the contemporary and historical relationship between countries and complex global forces are analyzed. Several global issues, such as migration, security, food, health, and climate are the major topics to study the increasing global interconnectedness and the political, economic, and cultural globalization.

At the end of this course:
Students will acquire the foundational knowledge in the field of international studies.
Students will demonstrate an ability to think globally and use multidisciplinary perspectives to analyze global phenomena.
Students will be challenged to think critically about their own lives and their connection to other cultures, places and peoples in the world.

This course outline is designed for a Level 5 Intermediate Communication course at Portland Community College. It addresses listening, speaking, pronunciation, and presentation skills within the theme of career exploration drawing on some materials adapted from Oregon Career Information System.

The curriculum is designed for a course that is 10 weeks long. Each class period is two hours long, and the class meets twice weekly for a total of 20 class periods plus final exam. During the course, students complete several projects:
a survey that they report in small groups
a speech that they give to the whole class
a video presentation that they share online
a job interview as part of their final exam

MTH 256 at Portland Community College includes a variety of differential equations and their solutions, with emphasis on applied problems in engineering and physics. Uses differential equations software. Students communicate results in oral and written form. Graphing and Computer Algebra System (CAS) technology are used, such as Desmos and/or GeoGebra which are available at no cost. This is a one-term introduction to ordinary differential equations with applications. Topics include classification of, and what is meant by the solution of a differential equation, first-order equations for which exact solutions are obtainable, explicit methods of solving higher-order linear differential equations, an introduction to systems of differential equations, and the Laplace transform. Applications of first-order linear differential equations and second-order linear differential equations with constant coefficients will be studied.

With this supplement, we are adding to the work of Thomas Judson's “The Ordinary Differential Equations Project” by providing additional practice problems that mostly focus on applications. We worked with the 2022 edition 2  of The Ordinary Differential Equations Project 3 .

In sections 2.2, 2.4, 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4, we utilize the work and ideas of Steven Strogatz in his paper titled “Love Affairs and Differential Equations” 4 , Published in the February 1988 edition of Mathematics Magazine. This paper and several others expanding these ideas can be found by googling “Romeo and Juliet differential equations”.

Open Resources for Community College Algebra (ORCCA) is an open-source, openly-licensed textbook package (eBook, print, and online homework) for basic and intermediate algebra. At Portland Community College, Part 1 is used in MTH 60, Part 2 is used in MTH 65, and Part 3 is used in MTH 95.

Focuses on academic writing as a means of inquiry. Uses critical reading, discussion and the writing process to explore ideas, develop cultural awareness and formulate positions. Emphasizes development of a variety of strategies to present evidence in support of a thesis.

Improves reading through work on vocabulary development, motor skills, comprehension and some reading rate improvement. Instruction includes sentence structure, paragraph and essay development, and written expression. Students can expect to increase working vocabulary and improve skills in basic communications.

Welcome to WR 227, our Technical and Professional Writing 1 course! WR 227 introduces
technical and professional communications. As a student in this course, you can expect to
compose, design, revise, and edit effective letters, memos, reports, descriptions, instructions, and
employment documents. This course emphasizes precise use of language and graphics to
communicate complex technical and procedural information safely, legally, and ethically. Two
instructor conferences are required.

This advanced pronunciation course builds on a student’s basic understanding of the sounds and speech patterns of English with a focus on suprasegmental skills, such as stress, thought groups, intonation, linking, and phonological changes. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to apply the process of developing pronunciation skills and be able to identify and correct pronunciation problems in order to produce clearly understandable English in an academic setting.

One special feature is the inclusion of meaningful scripts and prompts for pronunciation diagnostics and practice that incorporate themes from Tema Okun’s descriptions of characteristics of white supremacy culture. These ideas, therefore, provide meaningful topics in which to explore our cultures and ourselves. They provide motivation for communication practice.
